Born to Noble blood, raised to become a fine leader and knight, that was Rowan’s destiny. At least, it used to be.
Eighteen years ago to the day, the armies of Bane descended upon his home of Iberand, the fighting was fierce and the siege seemed to drag on for weeks. His father’s men fought valiantly, and many gave their life in the fight against the besieging forces. In the end though, the defenders were overwhelmed and the city was razed, the farmlands were burnt and his father put to the sword.
Wounded in the early fighting, Rowan was unable to help defend the walls against the final attack and was snuck out of the city by a small squad of the elite guard, on direct order from his father. Once word of the capture of the walls reached Rowan, he vainly attempted to rouse a militia among the peasantry to resist the raiding forces left by the main host of the invading army. Despite his best efforts, the rebellion was crushed merciless and the dead were left in piles strewn along the roads to serve as a reminder to those who would oppose Bane.
Defeated and without hope, Rowan fled into the countryside, blaming himself for his father’s death and the utter failure of the rebellion. He wandered for days in search of any pockets of resistance, militias or places yet to fall under Bane’s control, but all that was to be found among his scorched homelands were ash and sorrow. Resigning himself to his failings, he fled further into exile.
He trained alone in the wilderness, honing his skills and sharpening his senses. Already a finely trained warrior, Rowan’s martial prowess was tempered by his focus, and a new man was forged out of his desire for justice. Over the years his fiery anger dulled and he realized that true victory could only come from the people themselves, not just a disaffected nobel. Breaking his exile and setting out with renewed purpose, Rowan swore upon his sword that he would see peace restored to the world even if it meant killing every last vile creation of Bane’s with his own hands, and that someday the shining spires of Iberand would be restored to their true glory.
At first, Rowan aided small villages by organizing and training the locals, as well as aiding in the preparation of defenses and standing at the front lines himself. It was not long before the servants of Bane caught on though, and Rowan was captured after creating a diversion to allow the townsfolk to escape alive. A man of his stature was indeed a great prize to the raiders, and Rowan knew his fate would be grim if he could not find a way to escape…
